A weekend of contrasting weather on the outside courts in Bideford as both teams travelled to Devon for their Regional Group matches.
The girls arrived on a Sunny Saturday very confident and full of vigour for the challenges ahead. After an extended (2 hour!) warmup we finally got down to business as we took on Cornwall. Some positive Tennis and smiles all round as we won comprehensively.
Elly kept the girls grounded and focussed for the tougher test of Devon in the final. Some long and challenging matches which really felt like ‘County Cup’ was back! The girls were superb, winning all their matches and Avon are the champs! Highlights included Flo winning a very tight match (she couldn’t believe she’d won!) Some tasty doubles and brilliant flag baring skills and support! The girls team of Amalie, Febe, Florence, Lara, Natalia and Olivia were rightly crowned Regional winners.
Switch to the Sunday for the boys turn. The weather couldn’t have been more different. Captain Ollie (sunburnt from Saturday) was worried about potential hypothermia on Sunday 🙂 The character the boys showed, though! They battled through the elements winning convincingly vs Cornwall.
‘Dévon jà vu’ as we met Devon again in the final. Another close match saw Devon sneak ahead 3-1 on singles with Archie winning his match to keep our title hopes alive. Archie & Arti went on to win a brilliant doubles match in the dreaded match breaker decider. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, as Tommy & George lost valiantly in their doubs. A deserved win for Devon overall but who knows, on a different (dryer) day it could have been different! Well played to Archie, Arthur, Barnaby, Freddie, George and Tommy.
Massive thanks to all the parental support especially on the Sunday. Despite the rain it was great for all the kids, to look up and see such positive faces of support. All County Cup Results are here: https://avontennis.org.uk/county-cup-race/
